What is the JLPT?
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the world's most recognized certification for non-native Japanese speakers. It's conducted twice a year (July and December) in Japan and select countries worldwide, including Pakistan through the Japan Foundation.
JLPT certification is essential for:
- University admissions in Japan (N2 or N1 required)
- Work visas and employment in Japanese companies
- Scholarships like MEXT (Monbukagakusho)
- Career advancement in Japanese-related fields
JLPT Levels: From N5 to N1
The JLPT has five levels, with N5 being the easiest and N1 the most advanced.
N5 - Beginner Entry Level
Basic understanding of Japanese. Ability to read and understand typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji.
N4 - Elementary Basic
Basic understanding of slightly more advanced Japanese. Ability to read materials on familiar topics and understand conversations at near-natural speed.
N3 - Intermediate Work Ready
Ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations. Read materials on familiar topics and understand main points.
N2 - Pre-Advanced University Ready
Ability to understand Japanese in a variety of contexts. Read newspaper headlines, understand slightly complex articles.
N1 - Advanced Master Level
Ability to understand Japanese used in a wide range of situations. Read editorials, complex articles, and follow logical structures.
Test Structure
Each JLPT level has three main sections testing different language skills.
| Level | Language Knowledge | Reading | Listening | Total Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N5 | 25 min | 50 min | 30 min | 105 min |
| N4 | 30 min | 60 min | 35 min | 125 min |
| N3 | 30 min | 70 min | 40 min | 140 min |
| N2 | 105 min combined | — | 50 min | 155 min |
| N1 | 110 min combined | — | 60 min | 170 min |
Scoring System
The JLPT uses a scaled scoring system. Each section has a minimum passing score, and you must achieve the overall passing score as well.
| Level | Passing Score | Total Possible | Required Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| N1 | 100 | 180 | 56% |
| N2 | 90 | 180 | 50% |
| N3 | 95 | 180 | 53% |
| N4 | 90 | 180 | 50% |
| N5 | 80 | 180 | 44% |
Important: You must pass each section individually, not just achieve the overall passing score!
